Norway Day Four Part 1 - Geirangerfjord

Geirangerfjord is the most famous fjord in the world. It has an S-shapr with two towns on each end; Geiranger and Hellesylt. Geiranger is the inspiration for the kingdom in the Disney movie "Frozen". The mountains are 5577 feet high and continue to plunge another 853 feet below the water. This is what makes a fjord, plummeting mountains going directly to the water with no usable coast.

Luckily, they have a ferry tour for us to enjoy.

If we turned left instead of right, this fresh water Fjord would flow into the Atlantic ocean. Many cruise ships come this way.

The grandest corner ever turned.

The First farm on the tour. They had 250 fruit trees planted on the little slope of grass you see. Oh, and 200 goats as well.

Can you imagine 250 fruit trees on that little slope? Can you imagine picking the fruit of 250 fruit trees on that STEEP slope without falling in the fjord?

They stopped farming this land around 1950.

Another TWO Farms one on the bottom is close to the lake. The one on the top needed ladders to get to the grazing area for their 1 horse, 25 cows, and 150 goats.

HOW THE HELL did they get a horse and a bunch of cows up there??? Oh, they used the ladder to avoid the tax man as well.

The Bridal Veil Waterfall.

Can you see the face?

He is gonna get you!

Opposite the face.
The Malaysian (yes, I asked) people around me were all excited about seeing something else in the rocks... I did not see it. If you do, point it out to me please.

Full size cruise ships come through the fjord every week. Especially Disney. That is a super fancy yacht. I don't have a super fancy yacht, but if I did.... I would come here too.
Welcome to the inspiration for the  movie "Frozen" Geiranger, Norway.

During the winter, this zigzag road is the only way in or out of Geiranger... the rest of the area is frozen and covered with snow.

This is a farm next to the Seven Sisters waterfall. The Family farmed it for a few hundred years. They had to tether their kids to the house so they didn't fall off the cliff. This shot is super close up.
Same farm, farther away.

Same farm no zoom. EEK! They had cows, and sheep up there as well as the tethered children.
Same again, ferry is turning the corner so you can see the Seven Sisters better. The farm was worked until the 1960's.

I love a crevasse!

Coming up on Geiranger, Norway.

Videos from the Ferry Round trip.

The Seven Sisters and Suitor Waterfalls - 1

Fun for kids on the ferry.
Coming into Hellesylt.

The waterfall in the middle of  Hellesylt, Norway. Helps to fill the Fjord.
